Merry Christmas 2015

Merry Christmas 2015
Wow! It's that beautiful time of year again that all of God's children come together praising and basking in the light of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We love each of you- our dear friends and family. You have a special place in our hearts. We are grateful for the love, example, and special ways each of you have touched us. We wish you the very best YEAR!

Some special things happened this year. Humanitarian work has always been a big passion. Five of us got to go to Mexico and build a home out of cinder block for a destitute family. We fell in love with the people and can't wait to go again this summer. We also were blessed to be able to take Michael and his fiancee to Houston where he served. We met some of the wonderful people he baptized, and worked with on his mission. He taught us some fun and important facts like the Houston Dive. This is when you enter a busy freeway, shoot over four lanes of traffic to exit on the other side all within seconds! Oh what fun!!

Our big ol' family just keeps growing... and growing up! Hilary was married, and Michael will marry January 5th. We love Karianne, Ty, and Kaylene and feel so blessed to have them be a part of our family. We have Nate on a mission in Paraguay with 7 months left and Jared counting down before he can go. He plans to leave right after his 18th birthday June 28th.

What joy watching all our children grow and progress. Some unexpected inconveniences like stitches, and a broken bone but mostly blessings. The children have been involved with National Honor Society, scholarships, violin and piano recitals, sports, clubs, the list goes on. Our youngest learning to walk and our oldest graduating from college in the Spring. We are just so honored to be each of their parents!

Harry and I find ourselves laughing a lot at the funny things the kids do and say at the different stages they are at! They keep us very busy but we find time for short dinner dates, weekly movies, and our Temple date every Saturday morning. We just celebrated our anniversary and look forward to the rest of forever! We feel so blessed by your friendship and support and love.

Family Home Evening ideas from General Conference Oct. 2015

This morning my baby took an early nap and my toddler is watching his favorite show "Super Why" which I find funny because his favorite word is "Why?" Anyway, I have found a bit of time to carry out an idea which was inspiration for sure, to make some Family Home Evening Packets from Conference.

I really loved the talks and have listened again and again to them. I notice common counsel from the Prophet and Elders and that sometimes their counsel through the years is word for word repeat. Wow. They really want us to listen and apply what is being said.  In the days of old many prophets were killed for their preachings. Today it is said we just ignore them. Well, not me. I'm going to really try to hearken and change as I humbly try to obey them. I have a long ways to go, but I feel tremendous hope in Christ. For through His Atonement all things will be made right.

The first talk I thought would be fun as a visual is God is at the Helm by M. Russell Ballard. I can't wait to teach this to my little ones and even my teenagers. I think it will have a great potential for discussion as we share thoughts and testimony.

I will pull out a ship visual that will be filled with word-strips.

On the back of the ship will read...
As we ponder just these few truths that exist within the Old Ship Zion, let us stay on board and remember that, by definition, a ship is a vehicle, and the purpose of a vehicle is to take us to a destination.
Our ship’s destination is the full blessings of the gospel, the kingdom of heaven, the celestial glory, and the presence of God!
God’s plan is in place. He is at the helm, and His great and powerful ship flows toward salvation and exaltation. Remember that we cannot get there by jumping out of the boat and trying to swim there by ourselves.
Exaltation is the goal of this mortal journey, and no one gets there without the means of the gospel of Jesus Christ: His Atonement, the ordinances, and the guiding doctrine and principles that are found in the Church.
It is the Church wherein we learn the works of God and accept the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ that saves us. It is within the Church that we form the commitments and covenants of eternal families that become our passport to exaltation. It is the Church that is powered by the priesthood to propel us through the unpredictable waters of mortality.
Let us be grateful for the beautiful Old Ship Zion, for without it we are cast adrift, alone and powerless, swept along without rudder or oar, swirling with the strong currents of the adversary’s wind and waves.
Hold tight, brothers and sisters, and sail on within the glorious ship, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we will reach our eternal destination.

Inside the ship will be the word strips from his talk..
1. It has always been a challenge for the world to accept living prophets and apostles, but it is so essential to do so in order to fully understand the Atonement and the teachings of Jesus Christ and to receive a fulness of the blessings of the priesthood that are given to those He has called.
Too many people think Church leaders and members should be perfect or nearly perfect. They forget that the Lord’s grace is sufficient to accomplish His work through mortals. Our leaders have the best intentions, but sometimes we make mistakes. This is not unique to Church relationships, as the same thing occurs in our relationships among friends, neighbors, and workplace associates and even between spouses and in families.
Looking for human weakness in others is rather easy. However, we make a serious mistake by noticing only the human nature of one another and then failing to see God’s hand working through those He has called.
Focusing on how the Lord inspires His chosen leaders and how He moves the Saints to do remarkable and extraordinary things despite their humanity is one way that we hold on to the gospel of Jesus Christ and stay safely aboard the Old Ship Zion.
2. A second truth is the doctrine of the plan of salvation. Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, God gave the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and many additional teachings to the Church. These include a knowledge of the plan of salvation, which is a map of where we came from, our purpose here on earth, and where we are going when we die. The plan also provides us with a unique, eternal perspective that we are God’s spirit children. By understanding who our Heavenly Father is and our relationship to Him and to His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, we will accept Their commandments and make covenants with Them that will lead us back into Their eternal presence.
Every time I hold a newborn child, I find myself wondering: “Who are you, little one? What will you become through the Atonement of Christ?”
We ask similarly reflective questions when someone we love dies: “Where are they? What are they seeing and experiencing? Does life continue? What will be the nature of our most cherished relationships in the great world of the spirits of the dead?”
3. Another key truth in the Church is that Heavenly Father created Adam and Eve for a lofty purpose. It was their charge—and, subsequently, the charge of their posterity—to create mortal bodies for God’s spirit children so they could experience mortality. By this process, Heavenly Father sends His spirit children to earth to learn and grow through the experiences of earth life. Because He loves His children, God sends heavenly messengers and Apostles to teach them about Jesus Christ’s central role as our Savior.
Through the centuries, prophets have fulfilled their duty when they have warned people of the dangers before them. The Lord’s Apostles are duty bound to watch, warn, and reach out to help those seeking answers to life’s questions.
Twenty years ago, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” In that inspired document, we concluded with the following: “We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.”5
4. Another important doctrine that we should cling to is to observe the Sabbath day. This helps us remain unspotted from the world, provides us with physical rest, and gives each of us the spiritual refreshment of worshipping the Father and the Son every Sunday.6 When we delight in the Sabbath day, it is a sign of our love for Them.7
As part of our efforts to make the Sabbath a delight, we have asked local leaders and Church members to remember that sacrament meeting is the Lord’s and should be rooted and grounded in His teachings. The presentation of the ordinance of the sacrament is when we renew our covenants and reconfirm our love for the Savior and remember His sacrifice and His Atonement.
This same spirit of worship should permeate our monthly fast and testimony meetings. This sacrament meeting is for members to briefly express gratitude, love, and appreciation for our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the restored gospel and to bear personal witness of these things. Fast and testimony meeting is a time to share brief inspirational thoughts and bear solemn testimony. It is not a time to give a speech.
Young children should practice sharing their testimonies in Primary and with their parents in family home evening gatherings until they understand the important meaning of a testimony.
The recent emphasis of making the Sabbath a delight is a direct result of inspiration from the Lord through the leaders of the Church. Ward council members should assist the bishopric several weeks in advance by reviewing music and topics that have been recommended for each sacrament meeting.
All of us are blessed when the Sabbath is filled with love for the Lord at home and at church. When our children are taught in the ways of the Lord, they learn to feel and to respond to His Spirit. We will all desire to attend each Sunday to partake of the sacrament when we feel the Spirit of the Lord. And all, young and old, who are carrying heavy burdens will feel the spiritual uplift and comfort that comes from a Sabbath day of devoted contemplation of our Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
After all the word strips have been taken out and discussed we could sing Master the tempest is Raging on pg. 105

Another fun talk was "What Lack I Yet" by Elder Larry R. Lawrence
For this one:Image result for jesus christYou could use any picture of Jesus Christ.
Start by saying....“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”1
The journey of discipleship is not an easy one. It has been called a “course of steady improvement.”2 As we travel along that strait and narrow path, the Spirit continually challenges us to be better and to climb higher. The Holy Ghost makes an ideal traveling companion. If we are humble and teachable, He will take us by the hand and lead us home.
However, we need to ask the Lord for directions along the way. We have to ask some difficult questions, like “What do I need to change?” “How can I improve?” “What weakness needs strengthening?”
President Harold B. Lee taught, “Every one of us, if we would reach perfection, must [at] one time ask ourselves this question, ‘What lack I yet?’”5
Have everyone take one of the sceneries and discuss after they read them.
1. I knew a faithful mother who humbled herself and asked, “What is keeping me from progressing?” In her case, the response from the Spirit came immediately: “Stop complaining.” This answer surprised her; she had never thought of herself as a complainer. However, the message from the Holy Ghost was very clear. In the days that followed, she became conscious of her habit of complaining. Grateful for the prompting to improve, she determined to count her blessings instead of her challenges. Within days, she felt the warm approval of the Spirit.
2. A humble young man who couldn’t seem to find the right young woman went to the Lord for help: “What is keeping me from being the right man?” he asked. This answer came into his mind and heart: “Clean up your language.” At that moment, he realized that several crude expressions had become part of his vocabulary, and he committed to change.
3. A single sister bravely asked the question: “What do I need to change?” and the Spirit whispered to her, “Don’t interrupt people when they are talking.” The Holy Ghost really does give customized counsel. He is a completely honest companion and will tell us things that no one else knows or has the courage to say.
4. One returned missionary found himself stressed with a very heavy schedule. He was trying to find time for work, studies, family, and a Church calling. He asked the Lord for counsel: “How can I feel at peace with all that I need to do?” The answer was not what he expected; he received the impression that he should more carefully observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy. He decided to dedicate Sunday to God’s service—to lay aside his school courses on that day and study the gospel instead. This small adjustment brought the peace and balance that he was seeking.
5. Years ago I read in a Church magazine the story of a girl who was living away from home and going to college. She was behind in her classes, her social life was not what she had hoped for, and she was generally unhappy. Finally one day she fell to her knees and cried out, “What can I do to improve my life?” The Holy Ghost whispered, “Get up and clean your room.” This prompting came as a complete surprise, but it was just the start she needed. After taking time to organize and put things in order, she felt the Spirit fill her room and lift her heart.
After discussing as a group how the Holy Ghost can and will prompt and teach us to become greater instruments in God's hands and more perfect testify of personal prayer and daily supplication to Heavenly Father. Also, of partaking of the Sacrament and being willing to give up all things to know God better.
A fun song for this FHE might be "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam." In our family this is CRAZY fun when all the big brothers and Daddy toss the little toddlers as high as they can every time the word "sunbeam" is sung in the song. They giggle so much. I'm certain this is a memory I will forever cling to through  the years.
Well, these are just a few but a good start for me.

Merry Christmas 2014

Merry Christmas friends and family,
This year we send our love for a prosperous and joyous new year from our home to yours.  Here is a little update of 2014 from our family.
Little J was born July 22nd. He has sweet little dimples and a round little belly! He is 16 pounds of energy at 4 months! Oh what a blessing he is!!
J has a rough and tough skip in his step. Curious and determined our little guy is the mimic of his big brothers and can’t wait for Daddy to get home each day so he can empty the garbage with him!
E started tumbling this year. She was elated to be able to go with Addi, Becca, John, and Melissa. She’s our spunky little princess who can do anything the older children can do and she’ll let you know!!
A loves to read and write. Each night before bed you’ll find her writing in her journal. Her letters to Mike and Nate are always well thought out and the longest! She also enjoys reading to her siblings, tumbling, and piano.
B was baptized this year!! She is getting to be quite the piano player and is very responsible about feeding our bunny Tar Baby. She and John enjoy SEM in school. She really likes being involved with Activity Days.
J is a cub scout and has learned so much from his great leaders. He likes to invent things out of duct tape, screws, nails and wood. He has mastered “She’ll be coming around the mountain” on the piano and plays while we sing.
M loves being a Bee Hive in YW’s!! She spends her time babysitting, reading, playing rugby, theater, and piano. She works very hard in school and tutors a bit!! She also sings in the ward choir with John and Becca.
S just finished his Eagle Project. He collected 1600lbs of food for the food bank and hygiene kits for the homeless before Thanksgiving. He enjoys drawing comics, and watching Studio C. He is such a fun big brother.
J likes to learn. In his past time you’ll find him programming or studying engineering. Lately he has mastered the Rubik Cube!! Earlier this month he went to run a race in California called “Footlocker.”
N has been serving in Paraguay for his mission since July. He loves the people, culture, and adventures. He has eaten crocodile and Paraná. He says they taste just like regular meat and fish. I prepared him well with my cooking!
M has been in Houston serving a mission too. He gets home in February.  We can hardly wait. He loves the people so much! We have become very good friends with his last companion’s family who live in Ogden.  Sweet blessings have come to us through both our sons’ service.
A is a nanny for a nice family in Ogden.  She has a special gift, little children love her so. She lives in Fruit Heights still. We got to go swim in her pool this summer!
H is moving up quickly in the professional world at Mylar Disability.
She oversees case workers and juggles a busy schedule!  She is on her toes and loves helping people.
We are grateful for the wonderful memories this year with our children. H and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary by going to Disneyland! No strollers to push or kids on our hip so we ran from ride to ride like giddy teenagers! Our life together is simple and sweet.

At this time of year and always we feel gratitude for a loving Savior and His gift of the Atonement. We have been blessed with opportunities this past year to invite others to come unto Christ. Watching them get baptized has been such a highlight for our family. Another big highlight was the re-dedication of the Temple and seeing so many loved ones there from our hometown in Wyoming. Almost every week I will see someone who helped shaped me growing up! What treasured blessings you are in our lives. We love you and wish you the very best Christmas and New Year.

Although we love pretend with our little ones which includes gifts from Santa, Ralphie the Elf who is watching whether we are naughty or nice, and magic in the jingle bells...Our focus for the Christmas holiday is on Christs birth. Here we are at a live nativity play.  Many of the Monday nights in December we talk of Christ, rejoice, in Christ, and learn how we can become more like Christ for Family Home Evening lessons. On Christmas Eve each year we reenact the nativity play with the children! Another strong tradition is frosting cookies and caroling to the neighbors delivering them, gingerbread houses, and homemade chocolates.

Building Confidence in your children

So over the past couple of weeks I've had some reoccurring thoughts concerning building confidence in myself and others, particularly my children. I've had promptings as I study and ponder experiences I've had or observed. I feel it important to try to write these thoughts down. I've decided I won't be able to cover it all, because there is a lot to it...but I'm going to try and write the most important parts of developing the strongest sort of confidence and maintaining this confidence according to my heart!

First off, everyone wants their children to "hold the world in their hands" so to speak. We as well as for our children desire to feel optimistic about our futures, and expect success. We want for ourselves and our children to feel comfortable in our own skin, and recognize the goodness in our lives and feel hope. These are strong characteristics associated with confidence. Their are two kinds of confidence I think. The world seems to view a sort of "self-confidence" based on being able to do well at something. This is where the notion that putting your child in a certain activity that they eventually excell at will build their confidence. It's true, it does build their self-confidence... sometimes even their pride, unfortuanately.  Don't get me wrong...all of our children have many activities which enhance and bless their lives. Luckily they've been humble and grateful for the most part. But some fall into the trap of even believing that confidence comes from being better than somebody else or having more. This is the worlds answer for a high self-esteem. I've seen this sort of self-esteem not hold up when the child has hard times or fails. For adults it's much the same, feelings of defeat...like we just aren't all that great. It's sort of a shallow sort of confidence that really leads an individual into always wanting more and never really feeling fulfilled if not balanced.

I have observed with myself and in raising my children that you can have an army of people telling you that you are amazing and wonderful, but until you believe you are living a life amazing and wonderful you continue to deny it. So what really is amazing and wonderful?" As I've observed this it ties strongly into who am I? Does a higher law exist that God governs? Does this law being followed make me amazing and wonderful? In reality self-esteem is being self-sufficient and being able to look upwards working towards your goals, right? It's when you can handle disappointment as well as success. It's taking responsibility having self-fulfillment. Now here's the coolest part....

There is an even stronger sort of confidence that truly does come from a higher power whom I'll refer to as Heavenly Father or God. This is where the miracles, balance and ability to successfully know where to even center your goals and have determination to accomplish them come. This is where the actual being able to "hold the world in your hands" feeling is attainable, but with one exception...Heavenly Father giving the strength to "hold the world" as so to speak. This is why children succeed, without needing to be nursed along with constant "never cutting the apron strings" syndrome from a parent.  The answer is simply....God. Service to others, and personal and daily supplication with Him will develop lasting confidence. Physical elements are important, but according to Russell M. Neilson spiritual and physical elements each must be nurtured if we are to earn proper self-esteem. Service is a principal that contributes to "strong enough" confidence to "bounce back" because it develops humility and confidence at the same time. It's knowing you don't have to carry heavy burdens on your back alone, that Heavenly Father will carry them. He sent His Son to this earth who Atoned for our sins or basically to carry our burden of sin or trial for us. It's interesting that when we come unto Him our confidence and faith grow. All we have to do is live His laws and He'll bless us with his grace or power as we do so.

So you might be saying, "Well, how do you teach a child to have personal and daily scripture study, prayer, and supplication before God? and is it too late to start now?" Honestly, I don't think it's ever too late. Just as you feed your child food and introduce them to yummy new foods you also feed them spiritually by introducing them to the fulfillment of scriptural and prayerful feast. Continue doing this as an example that they will apply these things into their own personal life if they chose. This in my opinion is the most important thing a parent can teach a child. For when that child has a difficult time they will remember the things you taught, if they are wise.

Now I want to go into building confidence in another angle too...
I really agree with John Lund (family and marriage therapist). He stated for a successful marriage you must have acceptance, affection, and appreciation. I want to go a step further and say that the human needs these three things to successfully progress and reach their highest potential...Acceptance, Affection, and Appreciation. But I must add another big "A" which is most important. That is Atonement. Teaching a child by feeding them with these 4 keys and teaching them to live by them provides the spiritual and physical environment for them to succeed. If you think about it deeply this is why relationships flourish, why children grow up to be great, and why people survive the most severe of circumstances.

Acceptance= being fiercly loyal, respect, patient, cherish, look to their heart rather than performance, encourage
Affection=hug and kiss, compliment, show concern, tender, compassionate, touch (Matt. 9:29-30 and John 13: 4-5) And never turn from love- embrace it
Appreciation=chose to notice good, lift, strengthen, honor them, build them up in honesty
Atonement=teach them repentance (to feel bad, apologize, make ammends, and never do it again) teach them of Christ's mercy and justice, teach of Christs grace and miracles, never give up, forgive others- not that it makes the wrong a right but it frees them, That they are entiltled to all these gifts of the Spirit and to rely on Christ and He will guide their path.

When these 4 keys are the guiding teaching tools and foundation of the home there is no need for manipulation, or doing your child's responsibilities, or even bailing them out when they fail. By doing these things it actually takes away your child's confidence. They will be strong enough to handle disappointments that the world throws at us. They will be resilient and accomplish great goals. God will be with them. You will be with them and they will know it.

This sort of confidence which is referred to as faith or trust. The Book of Mormon ( a LDS book of scripture) has such powerful examples of people who have this "faith or trust" that it not only builds self-esteem but develops and heals the dignity of the individual, according to Spencer W. Kimball. I have seen this healing power in myself and others who are very close to me. Well, I've written enough to bore probably most so I'll stop. It's a beginning of how I feel anyway. I have a lot more to learn, but for now this will suffice.

Easter

Easter 2014
The children were so excited to get a black, little bunny for their new pet and for Easter. Many names were thought of like Midnight, Cloudy, Blackie, Oreo, and Tar Baby. All the names were voted on and Tar Baby was the winner!! Dad thought of it.
It’s a sweet, lion head breed. He’s a boy! He is so calm and will only get about 7 lbs big. Everyone loved the new bunny.  Mom picked him up after tumbling on Friday. On Saturday they played with him and held him a lot. The children let him play on the grass surrounded by chicken wire so he wouldn’t run off. Or would he?? Late Saturday afternoon the bunny was missing! Oh no! Where could he have gone? He must of slipped under the chicken wire and hopped away. We prayed, looked all over, and prayed some more. Becca made a missing bunny sign and we walked down to the neighbors and looked in their yards. On Saturday night we had our family BBQ and egg hunt. Everyone went to the park to play baseball while mom hid eggs. She thought she heard some movement in the backyard, but could see the bunny. We prayed again at family prayer for our missing bunny. Mom announced in RS Sunday that we were missing our bunny. On Sunday afternoon (Easter) Becca ran in the house. “We saw our bunny!!” We all ran out and looked under the deck again. Addi said she saw it under the lawn mower. Jared and Dad gently pulled it out and sure enough, there was Tar Baby!!

The Last Days....and saftey

We believe as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints that in these, the last days we will see many signs before Christ returns to the earth. Some of these signs will be wars and rumors of wars, scattered Isreal will be gathered (2 Ne. 25:15-17), wickedness will be rampant (2 Timothy 3:1-7), and physical calamities will occur (Matt. 1:29, 32-33) just to name a few. We are already seeing this and will continue to see it increase. However, we know we'll be protected. Our families will be safe in God's embrace as we follow His teachings and live the gospel.

Our family just returned home from a vacation in California. The night we arrived we gathered our children together in our motel room as we read from the Book of Mormon. This is a routine event that takes place each night followed by family prayer. As we were reading in 3 Ne. 8 it brought close to home the reality of the words in this book of scripture written by prophets in the ancient american continent during the time of Christs crucifixion. "But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth; (3 Ne. 8:12) For a brief moment the light fixtures and beds began to rumble and rattle. We all looked at eachother stunned wondering what just happened! A feeling of complete peace came over me that obedience is always followed with safety and contentment. Though this was just a tremor from a 5.3 earthquake that happened 20 miles from L.A. our family would always be safe in Christ no matter what the trial. Righteous choices would forever set us free. What a comfort I received as a mother who's desire is to keep my children safe and happy.

“Treasure up the Lord’s word. Possess it, own it, make it yours by both believing it and living it. For instance: the voice of the Lord says that if men have faith, repent, and are baptized, they shall receive the Holy Ghost. It is not sufficient merely to know what the scripture says. One must treasure it up, meaning take it into his possession so affirmatively that it becomes a part of his very being; as a consequence, in the illustration given, one actually receives the companionship of the Spirit. Obviously such persons will not be deceived where the signs of the times and the Second Coming of the Messiah are concerned” (McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 1:662).

If ye are prepared ye shall not fear was brought close to home! (D&C 38:30) I will be forever greatful for the Lord, His teachings, and words through His prophets!
