Our family just returned home from a vacation in California. The night we arrived we gathered our children together in our motel room as we read from the Book of Mormon. This is a routine event that takes place each night followed by family prayer. As we were reading in 3 Ne. 8 it brought close to home the reality of the words in this book of scripture written by prophets in the ancient american continent during the time of Christs crucifixion. "But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth; (3 Ne. 8:12) For a brief moment the light fixtures and beds began to rumble and rattle. We all looked at eachother stunned wondering what just happened! A feeling of complete peace came over me that obedience is always followed with safety and contentment. Though this was just a tremor from a 5.3 earthquake that happened 20 miles from L.A. our family would always be safe in Christ no matter what the trial. Righteous choices would forever set us free. What a comfort I received as a mother who's desire is to keep my children safe and happy.
“Treasure up the Lord’s word. Possess it, own it, make it yours by both believing it and living it. For instance: the voice of the Lord says that if men have faith, repent, and are baptized, they shall receive the Holy Ghost. It is not sufficient merely to know what the scripture says. One must treasure it up, meaning take it into his possession so affirmatively that it becomes a part of his very being; as a consequence, in the illustration given, one actually receives the companionship of the Spirit. Obviously such persons will not be deceived where the signs of the times and the Second Coming of the Messiah are concerned” (McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 1:662).
If ye are prepared ye shall not fear was brought close to home! (D&C 38:30) I will be forever greatful for the Lord, His teachings, and words through His prophets!
